Quick answer, if you just want to try it once
Sports Basement runs a rental counter at most of its Bay Area stores — Presidio (SF), Redwood City, Sunnyvale, Campbell, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, and Novato — for roughly $10–40 depending on the model, often credited toward a purchase if you buy within 30 days. Bring photo ID and a physical credit card. It's the closest thing on the Bay Area to a no-commitment "just let me try this" option, and it reaches most of the regions below.

Flyte Racquet Club in San Rafael — already covered on this site's San Rafael page for its 23 courts — has no pro shop, paddle sales, or rentals as of this pass. There are reports of informal "Royal Pickleball" ambassador demo tables at San Rafael's Municipal Tennis and Pickleball Center and in Novato, but that looks like a seasonal volunteer program, not a reliable storefront — don't plan a trip around it without calling first. The nearest Dick's Sporting Goods is in Petaluma, too far a stretch to call North Bay here, so it's not listed as an option.
